Worf (Michael Dorn) is shocked when his son Alexander (Brian Bonsall) refuses to participate in the First Rite of Ascension, a ceremony in which a young Klingon declares his intention to become a warrior. Hoping to help, Picard (Patrick Stewart) arranges for the Enterprise to stop at Maranga IV, where Worf and Alexander attend the festival of Kot'baval. Afterwards, they are attacked by three dagger-wielding assassins. Luckily, K'mtar (James Sloyan), a mysterious family friend, arrives to help. Back on the Enterprise, K'mtar offers to train Alexander to become a warrior. But when the crew uncovers new information about the previous day's attack, Worf confronts K'mtar and discovers a shocking secret about his first born son!

Seeking to avenge the death of his son, DaiMon Bok (Lee Arenberg) contacts Picard (Patrick Stewart) and threatens to kill his son, Jason Vigo (Ken Olandt). Picard is unaware he had a son, but admits that he did have a relationship with Vigo's mother 24 years earlier. Since Jason is in danger regardless of his parentage, Picard sets course for Camor IV, where the young man lives. A genetic test verifies that Picard is Jason's father. Now the crew must track down the elusive Bok before he strikes. In a final bitter confrontation, Picard risks everything to save his son - but is he really his son?
