With crew evaluations underway, tension runs high among four junior officers on board Enterprise: nurse Alyssa Ogawa (Patti Yasutake), Sam Lavelle (Dan Gauthier), Sito Jaxa (Shanon Fill) and Taurik (Alexander Enberg). As the four struggle to prove themselves to their superiors, an escape pod is detected within the boundaries of Cardassian space. After the passenger is secretly transported aboard the Enterprise, Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and the crew continue to challenge the young officers, specifically Sito, with more difficult tests. Ultimately, Picard (Patrick Stewart) reveals that there is more at stake than a job promotion. These challenges are preparation for a top-secret Federation mission that could cost one of the young officers his or her life!

Data (Brent Spiner) is sent to Barkon IV, a preindustrial trial planet, to retrieve some radioactive material from a downed probe. Unfortunately, something goes awry and he loses his memory and wanders into a Barkon village carrying a container full of radioactive metal. Hoping to find a clue to Data's identity, one of the villagers unwittingly opens the container. The town blacksmith has no idea what the strange metal is, but offers to buy some to transform into jewelry. Data agrees and when the Barkons become ill, the frightened townspeople blame him for causing the disease. Realizing that everyone who is sick came in contact with the radioactive metal, Data works to develop a cure before an angry mob kills him! Meanwhile, back on the Enterprise, Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) takes the Bridge Officer's test.
