Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) has been murdered! When the crew of the Enterprise learns that Picard was ambushed while visiting an archaeological site, they begin to hunt for the killer. An eyewitness leads them to Barradas III where Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is captured by mercenaries. On board their ship, he finds Picard alive and well, posing as a smuggler. It seems the alien troopers are stealing valuable artifacts from archaeological sites throughout the sector, though no one knows why. Meanwhile, the Enterprise closes in on the mercenary ship and prepares for battle. In a shocking gambit, Riker joins forces with the mercenaries, orders Data (Brent Spiner) to drop the shields, and Picard fires on the Enterprise! Part one of two.
