En route to Starfleet Academy, where Picard (Patrick Stewart) is scheduled to deliver the year's commencement address, the crew learns that Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) and his squadron were involved in a devastating accident in which a cadet was killed.

While an initial inquiry places blame for the accident on the victim, Picard and the crew begin their own investigation. To protect their careers, the squadron leader (Star Trek: Voyager's Robert Duncan McNeill) urges the cadets to stick together even if it means disregarding the facts.

At the hearing, Wesley is questioned about the data from his flight recorder and caught in a lie. Picard, whose own investigation has revealed the truth, sternly reminds Wesley of his duties as a Starfleet cadet: tell the truth or suffer the consequences.

After destroying a deadly asteroid in the Pelloris Field, the Enterprise heads toward the Moselina System unaware that a strange particle cloud has contaminated the ship.

En route, Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett) beams aboard and announces her plans to marry a man she has never met. Much to her daughter's dismay, she accompanies Worf's son, Alexander (Brian Bonsall), to the Holodeck and introduces him to her hedonistic lifestyle.

Meanwhile, the crew finds that mechanical parts around the ship are being mysteriously transformed into gelatinous material. When life support systems begin to fail, the crew discovers an alien parasite from the asteroid is causing the problem. As they search for a solution, an even bigger disaster looms on the horizon: Lwaxana and her husband-to-be are completely incompatible!
