Seriously injured while undercover on Malcor III, Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) arrives in a native hospital. Shocked, the doctors determine Riker was surgically altered to appear Malcorian. Disbelieving Riker's assertion that he has genetic irregularities, the staff places him under guard.

When Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) learns Riker is missing, he contacts Malcor's leader, Chancellor Durken (George Coe), for help. While Picard tells Durken that the Federation has come in peace and friendship, Riker tries to escape and is almost beaten to death by a fear-stricken mob.

Taken into custody by Malcorian Security Minister Krola (Michael Ensign), Riker is interrogated and injected with lethal drugs, pushing him closer to death. Now Picard has only one hope: gain Durken's trust - before it's too late.

Lt. Commander Geordi LaForge (LeVar Burton) is thrilled at the prospect of finally meeting Dr. Leah Brahms (Susan Gibney), whose holodeck image he once fell in love with. But Geordi's romantic expectations are crushed when she comes aboard with a cold demeanor and a highly critical attitude.

Meanwhile, the discovery of a new alien life-form ends tragically when the creature is accidentally killed. When the remorseful crew realizes that the entity was pregnant, Picard (Patrick Stewart) employs the ship's phasers to perform a cesarean section. Unfortunately, the newborn latches onto the Enterprise and starts to drain energy from what it believes is its mother.

The crisis mounts when an attempt at removing the baby attracts adult aliens from their natural asteroid field. As the energy drain reaches critical levels, Geordi and Brahms try to rise above their friction to release the alien child and save the Enterprise.
