The Enterprise is the site for a meeting between the Federation and a mysterious race called the Legaran. Representing the Federation is famed Vulcan ambassador Sarek (Mark Lenard), who arrives early to prepare for the Legaran.

Sarek's aids warn Picard (Patrick Stewart) that Sarek is fatigued. Later, at a concert arranged in Sarek's honor, Picard is stunned to observe the Vulcan moved to tears. Troi (Marina Sirtis) and Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) surmise that Sarek is suffering from Bendii Syndrome, a degenerative disease characterized by the loss of emotional control. Picard decides that the only way to protect the Federations' interests is to mind-meld with Sarek. But can Picard withstand the violent intensity of Sarek's emotions?

Vacationing on the planet Betazed, Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Troi (Marina Sirtis) are surprised by Troi's mother, Lwaxana (Majel Barrett). They are soon joined by Daimon Tog (Frank Corsentino), a Ferengi desperately in love with Lwaxana. Suddenly, Tog activates a beam that seizes Lwaxana, Troi and Riker and transports them back to his ship.

Riker and Troi are imprisoned while Lwaxana is turned over to Farek (Ethan Phillips), a doctor who wishes to study Lwaxana's telepathic powers. Meanwhile, an Away Team travels to Betazed and discovers clues that suggest the Ferengi are behind the abduction. But when Picard (Patrick Stewart) scans radio transmissions for a distress signal, all he receives is interference. Unless a trail can be found, Riker and Troi's hopes of returning to the Enterprise will be lost forever.
