After locating the missing science vessel U.S.S. Lantree, the crew discovers the Lantree's crew dead from an unexpected cause: old age. The Enterprise then speeds towards the Lantree's last port of call, the Darwin Genetic Research Station, to warn its inhabitants of the possible danger.

The mysterious disease has already infiltrated the station. Chief researcher Dr. Sara Kingsley (Patricia Smith) pleads with Picard (Patrick Stewart) to evacuate the children, who show no signs of infection. Reluctantly, Picard allows Dr. Pulaski (Diana Muldaur) to examine one boy (George Baxter) in the protected environs of a shuttlecraft.

Moments after contact with the boy, Pulaski is stricken by the aging disease. While Pulaski resigns herself to her fate Picard desperately searches for a way to save the doctor's life.

An interstellar exchange brings a Benzite named Mendon (John Putch) to the Enterprise, and gives Riker (Jonathan Frakes) the opportunity to become the first Federation officer to serve on a Klingon ship.

Aboard the Klingon cruiser Pagh, Riker impresses his new shipmates when he subdues a second officer (Brian Thompson) who questions his authority. Meanwhile, Mendon uncovers a virulent strain of bacteria eating away at both hulls of the Enterprise and the Pagh. The Klingons mistakenly believe the Enterprise is responsible for the bacteria, and the Pagh's captain, Kargan (Christopher Collins), commands Riker to give the order to fire.

Riker's loyalty is divided between the Federation and the Klingon vessel he has sworn to serve. The lives of the Enterprise crew now hang in the deadly balance.
