Barbara Whitney's sophisticated, urban lifestyle in Manhattan smacks of her career-driven, single status: a tasteful loft filled with artwork, blind dates, and an empty refrigerator. That is, until the night that her sister, Ruth abandons her two children, Matt and Megan, and flies off to London in pursuit of a romantic liaison.
When Barbara discovers that Ruth is not coming back, she reluctantly tires to make a new life for the children. With the help of her friend, Sam, a world-weary artist, Barbara slowly transforms the four into their own definition of a loving "family."
