Synopsis:
One fateful night in 1959, Thomas Reilly is born at the exact moment a bus accident claims the lives of
Harrison (Charles Grodin), a frustrated singer dogged by stage fright; Milo (Tom Sizemore), a
two-bit burglar with a guilty conscience; Julia (Kyra Sedgwick), a young woman who has just let the
love of her life get away; and Penny (Alfre Woodard), a single mother who must leave her kids to work
the night shift. Soon, the four find themselves earthbound and permanently tied to Thomas--a quartet of
loving friends only he can see and hear. But when they realize their presence is disrupting the boy's life,
they make the heartbreaking decision to become invisible to him.
Twenty-seven years later, Thomas (Robert Downey, Jr.) has grown into a hard-driving executive who is
driving away his girlfriend (Elisabeth Shue). Finally, the four souls learn why they are connected
to Thomas--through him, they each have one chance to resolve the unfinished business in their lives. To do
this, they must temporarily take over his body, but "doubting Thomas" wants no part of it. The thing is, he
doesn't have a choice. |
