Following the success of the widescreen explosion of the CAV set issued in Japan, Fox issued this Extended Play edition, pressed by Pioneer. The initial pressing was done in Japan, with subsequent repressings done by Pioneer USA.

For the first time, Star Wars was available on LaserDisc in the US with the original running time in tact. Spread across 3 sides, with no supplements of any kind, Fox charged an outlandish $70 for the title.

Image Entertainment, responsible for distribution of Fox LaserDisc product during the 1990's, repressed the title constantly, engaging facilities both in Japan and the US.
