This edition of Star Wars was originally supposed to be on 4 sides, using the existing time compressed video maters from the Extended Play (CLV) edition. CBS/Fox mastered and pressed a four sided version, but during the QC process they found the time compressed transfer and the Standard Play format were not compatible. The transfer errors caused frame mis-alignments resulting in every second or third frame producing a jittered picture when still-step was used. The four sided version was never issued, and CBS/Fox transferred the LaserDisc master at the correct speed and increased the side count to five - and increased the retail price by $10.00 as well.

The original editions were pressed by Pioneer Video in Carson, California. In 1992, Image Entertainment commissioned a repressing of the title and used Pioneer LDC, Inc in Japan. The releases are identical, including the running time errors on the back of the jacket.
