En route to a potentially volatile meeting with the insect-like Jarada, Picard (Patrick Stewart) seeks refuge in the fabricated environment of the holodeck and goes back in time. The place: San Francisco. The year: 1941. In his new-found environment Picard assumes the guise of Dixon Hill, private detective. Picard is soon joined by Data (Brent Spiner), Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and Whalen, the ship's historian.

But when captain and crew attempt to return to the ship, they discover a malfunction in the holodeck, preventing their return and endangering the meeting with the easily angered Jarada. As Picard and his team battle to outwit a sinister thug (Lawrence Tierney), the Enterprise lies in jeopardy, held hostage by history.

Data (Brent Spiner) returns home when the Enterprise is sent to investigate the disappearance of an Earth colony in the Omicron Theta star system, where Data was discovered twenty-six years earlier.

Now Data's home planet is a dead world, devoid of all life forms. What could have killed everything on an entire planet? Searching for clues, the away team finds a laboratory containing android body parts. When the parts are assembled, the complicated form is an exact duplicate of Data.

The look-alike is Lore, Data's long-lost brother. But has Lore come back to life to help his brother...or to replace him?
