What part of "no" does Ensign Vorik (Alexander Enberg) not understand? Lt. Torres (Roxann Biggs-Dawson) wants no part of his unexpected and passionate marriage proposal. He's going through pon farr, an emotionally volatile Vulcan phenomenon that drives him to mate. But what goes around comes around. Soon after her encounter with Vorik, Torres also begins to experience fiery amorous yearnings. The unwilling object of her sudden obsession: Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill). Sent with Torres on an Away Team-assignment to a planet rich in gallicite, Paris finds his mission disrupted by her romantic fires. Meanwhile, Chakotay (Robert Beltran) discovers evidence that could mean an even greater disruption: the Borg were once on the planet.

Voyager is suddenly a ship without a captain. As the crew mourns the unexpected and mysterious demise of its commander, Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) looks on as if she's an unseen spirit. Determined to signal her presence, she makes a telepathic connection with Kes (Jennifer Lien), setting in motion the staff's attempt to free Janeway from what it suspects is a phase-shifted alternate reality. But the efforts prove unsuccessful, and the crew soon faces the unthinkable: Janeway is truly dead. But Janeway is not quite ready to go into that long tomorrow. Not while there's a crew to lead. Not while she's still eager to grab all the life she can hold. Summoning the will to defy her fate, she confronts the mysterious force that seeks to destroy her.
