Right place. Wrong time. Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and her crew have finally reached Earth, but it's the 20th century. And if they don't stop Los Angeles computer magnate Henry Starling (Ed Begley, Jr.) from meddling with the 29th-century timeship he's secretly discovered, they may never be able to return to the 24th century. Attempts to stop Starling ignite a chain reaction for crises. Doctor (Robert Picardo) is uploaded from Voyager and held hostage. Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) and Tuvok (Tim Russ) try to pass as L.A. residents while tracking Starling. Chakotay (Robert Beltran) and Torres (Roxann Biggs-Dawson) crash-land into a paramilitary compound. Starling, using the timeship technology, is able to counter the efforts to thwart him. But Janeway has one last countermove at her disposal.

She looks and sounds like medical assistant Kes (Jennifer Lien), but she doesn't act like Kes at all. Kes has become a host body for the consciousness of an Ilarian warlord named Tieran and she's lethal to anyone who tries to block the warlord's power-mad bid to establish himself as the Autarch (supreme ruler) of the planet of Ilari. Can the Voyager staff find a way to restore Kes to her true consciousness? Tuvok (Tim Russ) is only partially successful at infiltrating the Autarch's stronghold and establishing a Vulcan mind-meld with Kes. Meanwhile, other crew members make plans for an armed rescue mission. But the greatest battlefront is within Kes herself as she summons the will to fight the despot who controls her.
