Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) doesn't believe in spirits...but what if they held the power to save one of her crew? While taking shore leave on the Nechani homeworld, Kes (Jennifer Lein) walks into a sacred shrine and is jolted into a comatose state by a mysterious energy field. After Kes fails to respond to conventional treatments, Neelix (Ethan Phillips) finds records of an ancient king whose son was similarly stricken. To save the life of the prince, the king underwent a ritual of purification to beg the spirits to save his child's life. Forced to desperate measures, Janeway volunteers to undergo the ritual. The captain expects a series of challenges, however, what awaits her is an encounter that will challenge everything she has come to believe.

Could the Ferengi be holy sages? While tracking a wormhole in the Delta Quadrant, Voyager detects the existence of replicator technology on a nearby planet. Chakotay (Robert Beltran) and Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) are beamed down to investigate. What they find is a poverty-stricken society ruled by two Ferengi who had arrived on the planet via the wormhole, and have convinced the inhabitants that they are two demigods. In an effort to drive the Ferengi from the planet, Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) sends Neelix (Ethan Phillips), disguised as the Grand Proxy, official messenger of the Ferengi Grand Nagus. The "Grand Proxy" informs the Ferengi that he has orders to escort them home. Neelix's ruse seems to be working - until the Ferengi decide to "kill the messenger"!
