Hibernating survivors of the environmentally ravaged Kohl settlement remain in deep stasis four years beyond their wake-up date. They'll sleep 104 years more if the software overseeing the Kohls' dream life has its way. The program has turned rogue, taking the form of a cackling, malevolent Clown (Michael McKean) who knows that if the sleepers are allowed to return to normal consciousness he will "die". A sly combat of move and countermove unfolds when Chief Engineer Torres (Roxann Biggs-Dawson) and Ensign Kim (Garrett Wang) confront the Clown inside a bizarre dreamscape where the human mind is both a playground and a battleground. Is it real? Is it illusion? The distinction matters little when every moment is a fight for survival.

What do you get when you cross a Tuvok (Tim Russ) with a Neelix (Ethan Phillips)? You get Tuvix, a new crew member created when a transporter mishap fuses the two Voyager veterans into one entity. Tuvix, whose traits include the logic of Tuvok and the warmth and gabbiness of Neelix, proves himself an able member of the team. He's a valued advisor, a skilled technician, a trusted friend, and a deft hand in the gallery. But a cloud looms over his days. Doctor (Robert Picardo), the ship's Emergency Medical Hologram, has found a way to return Tuvix to his two original components - Tuvok and Neelix. But there's a significant problem: Tuvix does not want to die.

This episode was originally titled Symbiogenesis and some places still list it as such. Tuvix is the title displayed during the episode opening.
