Romantic rivalry over Kes (Jennifer Lein) has turned Neelix (Ethan Phillips) and Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) into foes who seemingly couldn't get along if their lives depended on it. But now their lives very much depend on teamwork. Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) sends them on a dangerous away mission to a planet that may have food for Voyager. The perils of the shuttlecraft flight don't lessen the pair's bickering. And the planet's stinging trigemic vapors only underscore their clash.

Then the duo find something that unites them: an abandoned, newborn reptohumanoid. But caring for the baby isn't part of the mission. What's more, their lives will be endangered should the infant's parents return. But by reaching out to this helpless creature, the two find a sense of moral purpose that turns their fighting into friendship.

Stardate Unknown
Something's gone terribly wrong on Voyager. Unsettling thoughts and longings from the darkest corners of the subconscious are becoming all too real to the crew. Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) experiences troubling run-ins with her fiance Mark. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) is confronted by his disapproving father. Torres (Roxann Biggs-Dawson) is caught up in a passionate, long-imagined romance with Chakotay (Robert Beltran). Nothing is as it seems. Yet everything leads to the very real and very complete disabling of the ship. Only Doc (Robert Picardo) and Kes (Jennifer Lein) seem unaffected by the escalating disturbances. On their shoulders rests the hope of returning the ship to normal operations. But they'd better act quickly. Because Kes's ability to resist the mysterious psi-force is beginning to waver.
