Chakotay (Robert Beltran) returns from a routine shuttle expedition badly injured. Logs show that during an encounter with an unidentified ship in a dark-matter nebula all of his neural energy was depleted and he will die if it is not replenished quickly. Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) orders Voyager back to the nebula to investigate. En route, Kes (Jennifer Lein) announces that she senses an alien presence on board. After several puzzling incidents, the crew deduce that a mysterious force must be manipulating the officers. While they struggle to secure the ship and flush the alien out, Chakotay fights for his life.

During an away mission, B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Biggs-Dawson) and Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) are abducted by the phage-plagued Vidiians and taken to a secret laboratory. The Vidiians believe the Klingon genome may hold the key to curing this deadly disease and thus begin to experiment on B'Elanna, literally splitting her into two separate beings -- one fully Klingon, the other fully human. After enduring a series of excruciatingly painful experiments, Klingon B'Elanna escapes from her captors and finds her human counterpart within the Vidiian complex. But in order to find a way off the planet, they will have to learn to work together.
