Operations Chief O'Brien (Colm Meaney) is locked in a cell that has no iron bars, no walls and no way out. He's a prisoner of his mind, the captive of an alien program that makes him remember two decades of harsh incarceration - even though he was subjected to the program for only two hours.

As the officer tries to get on with his life, he finds that a return to normalcy is anything but normal. Memories of his supposed past, including the killing of a kind cellmate, push him to the edge of guilt and rage. His mind is at the breaking point and his life is on the line. If O'Brien is to have a future, he must somehow triumph over the virtual past.

There's a good side and a bad side to a parallel universe. On the good, there's a Deep Space Nine. On the bad, there's Terok Nor, the station's beleaguered mirror-universe counterpart. There, you'll find that the evil opposite of Major Kira (Nana Visitor) is a gleeful assassin. And that one of her malevolent alternate-world allies is Worf (Michael Dorn), the Regent of a war fleet preparing to blast Terok Nor into nothingness.

Into this topsy-turvy realm comes Commander. Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). He thinks he's come to Terok Nor on his own agenda, but he'll soon discover he's been lured there by the embattled station's crew members.
