Returning from a mission in the Gamma Quadrant, Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and O'Brien (Colm Meaney) crash-land on a remote planet where they are captured by a group of Jem'Hadar soldiers. Their leader, Goran'Agar (Scott MacDonald), is mysteriously free of his race's genetic addiction to Ketracel-white, the drug used by the Dominion to enslave the Jem'Hadar.

After learning Bashir is a doctor, Goran'Agar gives him a choice: Find the cure to free his men from the tyranny--or die. As Bashir's experiments progress and a cure appears imminent, O'Brien finds a way to escape. But when he asks Bashir to go with him, the doctor refuses! Will his Hippocratic oath cost him his life?

On a rainy night, decades in the future, an aspiring writer visits Jake Sisko (Tony Todd), now an old man living in his grandfather's house on the Louisiana bayou. She asks him why he stopped writing many years ago and he tells her the story of his father's mysterious disappearance on board the Defiant more than 50 years before.

Though he was haunted by his father's death, Jake eventually went on to marry and become a famous writer. Yet when Ben Sisko (Avery Brooks) began appearing to his son in the flesh for short periods of time, Jake became obsessed with finding him, ultimately sacrificing his marriage and his career. Now he may have found a way to end this lifelong obsession, but at what cost?
