Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) prepares for the Zhian'tara, the Trill Rite of Closure. During the ritual, the memories of each of Dax's previous hosts will be transferred into someone else's body so that Jadzia may come to understand them and herself better. Complications arise when Jadzia meets with Joran, the mentally unstable host who preceded Curzon and once committed murder. But no one suspects that it is Curzon himself who will cause the most problems. However, once his mind and memories are transferred into Odo's (René Auberjonois) body, Sisko's crafty old mentor reveals that he has no intention of giving it up.

Admiral Krajensky (Lawrence Pressman) arrives at the station with news of a coup on the Tzenkethi homeworld that could threaten Federation colonists. En route to that sector, O'Brien (Colm Meaney) discovers that the Defiant has been sabotaged. An investigation reveals that Krajensky is the culprit and a Changeling. After escaping, he takes control of the Defiant and primes the ship for battle, while the Dominion hope to incite a war between the Tzenkethi and the Federation!

Naturally, the task of tracking this formidable adversary falls to Odo (René Auberjonois) who may become the first Changeling to break with the sacred tradition and harm one of his own kind.
