As the crew makes preparations for an arriving party of Romulans, O'Brien (Colm Meaney) is injured by an explosion and suffers some mild radiation poisoning. An unexpected side effect of this, which even Bashir (Siddig El Fadil) cannot explain, is a series of time-shifts into the near future. When O'Brien witnesses his own death and the destruction of the station, the crew becomes alarmed. In a desperate attempt to prevent the disaster, O'Brien exposes himself to a lethal dose of radiation and travels back to the future where he discovers a Romulan covert strike force hiding off the bow of Deep Space Nine! Can he return to the present and warn the crew in time?

On the eve of Bashir's (Siddig El Fadil) 30th birthday, a Lethean named Altovar (Victor Rivers) attempts to buy restricted medical supplies from him. Bashir refuses, but later returns to the infirmary only to find the Lethean raiding his supply cabinet. During a violent struggle, Bashir is knocked unconscious. He awakens to find the station deserted and just the most vital systems still functioning. What few members of the crew who can be found are acting wildly out of character. As Bashir begins aging rapidly, distant voices in his mind reveal that he is in a telepathically induced coma and will die in less than three hours unless he can find a way to escape!
