After an accident nearly destroys a Bajoran transport, Vedek Bareil (Philip Anglim) arrives at the station severely injured. Kai Winn (Louise Fletcher) reveals that they were enroute to a secret meeting to initiate peace talks with the Cardassians. Miraculously, Bashir (Siddig El Fadil) is able to revive Bareil, but as the negotiations begins, it becomes clear that without his help any hope of peace will die. Unfortunately, the experimental drug Bashir used to save Bareil is also destroying his internal organs. To avoid further damage, Bashir suggests he be put in stasis, but Bareil refuses. As the peace talks reach a critical stage, the damage becomes irreversible and Bareil may have to pay the ultimate price for peace.

In a Runabout, Kira (Nana Visitor) and Odo (René Auberjonois) pursue a Maquis attack ship to a deserted moon, where it crashes. Chasing their target through a group of caverns rocked by seismic activity, the two split up. But soon Kira runs into a snag when her foot gets caught in a strange crystal formation which seems to be spreading. As tremors continue to shake the cavern, Odo searches for a way to shatter the crystal before it completely envelopes her. Despite every effort, the situation becomes hopeless and Kira orders him to leave and save himself. But Odo refuses, finally professing his undying love. Will love conquer all or is Kira's heart made of stone?
