While working in the station's ore processing unit, O'Brien (Colm Meaney) accidentally activates an automated security program. The program was created years ago by Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo) to halt any uprising by the Bajoran slave workers, but its countermeasures are still deadly. When the program locks down the entire station and threatens to release highly toxic neurocine gas, Kira (Nana Visitor) destroys the life support system. This temporarily stops the spread of the gas, but it also activates the third phase of the security program which will cause the station to self-destruct in two hours - and not even Gul Dukat, who has come to the station to gloat, can stop it!

Exploring the Gamma Quadrant, the crew of the Defiant encounter a planet where none existed before. While visiting the inhabitants, Dax (Terry Farrell) becomes intrigued with a man named Deral (Brett Cullen), who explains that the planet, Meridian, shifts between this dimension and another. Unfortunately, the time periods spent in this dimension are getting shorter - this one will only last 12 days. As Dax's feelings for Deral grow stronger, the two plan to stay together. While the crew struggle to stabilize the planet before it vanishes for another 60 years, Dax makes a fateful decision to cross into the other dimension to be with her new found love!
