Preparing for an invasion by the Jem'Hadar, the soldiers of the Dominion, Kira (Nana Visitor) determines that the station lacks the firepower to defend itself. When Sisko (Avery Brooks) arrives with the USS Defiant, a warship originally designed to fight the Borg, they embark on a mission to the Gamma Quadrant to locate the Founders, the unseen leaders of the Dominion, and convince them of the Federation's peaceful intent. During the mission, Odo (René Auberjonois) begins to behave strangely. When the Defiant is attacked and overwhelmed by the Jem'Hadar, Odo escapes with Kira and sets a course for the Omarion Nebula - his homeworld!

After arriving on his homeworld, Odo (René Auberjonois) begins to learn about his past and the "Great Link" which binds all shapeshifters together. Meanwhile, back on the station, Sisko (Avery Brooks) becomes concerned when the Federation begins to negotiate a peace treaty with the Dominion and the Founders want to exclude the Romulans from the peace talks. Later, Sisko's objections are ignored and the Dominion is given control of the Bajoran sector, including the station and the wormhole. In desperation, Sisko gathers his forces and plans to collapse the wormhole to keep the Dominion on its side of the galaxy forever!
