When Martus Mazur (Chris Sarandon), a sweet-talking con man, arrives on the station, Odo (René Auberjonois) arrests him for swindling an old couple. While in a holding cell, Martus meets a sickly alien who proffers him a strange gambling device moments before his death.

After his release, Martus takes the device and opens a gambling club to rival Quark's. Meanwhile, Bashir (Siddig El Fadil) and O'Brien (Colm Meaney) participate in a friendly game of racquetball that sets the tone for an unfriendly rematch. As the rivalries intensify, minor accidents occur around the station with increasing frequency. Sisko (Avery Brooks) becomes suspicious and discovers that the gambling device is altering the laws of probability on the station--with dire results.

Dr. Mora Pol (James Solyan), the scientist who studied Odo (René Auberjonois) after he was discovered, arrives on the station with a clue to the shapeshifter's origins. Together they take a Runabout to investigate some unique DNA patterns found on a distant planet in the Gamma Quadrant. While on the planet's surface, they collect an unusual life form and barely escape before a series of violent tremors expose Odo to a strange volcanic gas.

Back on the station, the life form manages to escape, destroying the science lab. Later, its remains are found, but it is not the same creature from the planet. After a crew member is attacked, an investigation reveals the creature's DNA to match Odo's--and now it's hunting Dr. Mora!
