With less than five hours remaining before Bajoran assault vessels attack the station, Sisko (Avery Brooks) orders an evacuation. Kira (Nana Visitor) insists the only hope of stopping The Circle, an extremist group that wants to rid Bajor of all outsiders, is to get proof of the Cardassian involvement in the coup to Bajor's Chamber of Ministers. While she and Dax (Terry Farrell) embark on a desperate mission to alert the provisional government, Sisko and a team of officers remain on board and prepare to make the final stand against the Bajoran raiders. The fate of the station - and all of Bajor - lies in their hands. Part three of three.

A violent plasma storm forces the evacuation of the station, leaving a skeleton crew behind. When Verad Dax (John Glover), a desperate Trill, schemes his way on board with some Klingon mercenaries, he takes the remaining crew members hostage and forces Dr. Bashir (Siddig El Fadil) to transplant Jadzia's (Terry Farrell) symbiont to him.
While Bashir struggles to keep Jadzia alive, Sisko (Avery Brooks) urges Dax to return the symbiont, but he refuses. Unable to convince him, Sisko turns his attention to Mareel (Megan Gallagher), Dax's humanoid mate. But time is running out for Jadzia.
