While mapping an extremely dense globular cluster, sensors aboard the Enterprise mistakenly detect a massive explosion in the cargo bay. When crew members who were near the cargo bay begin to exhibit strange symptoms, including excessive fatigue, pain and anxiety, an investigation reveals a mysterious sub-space force in the room. Troi (Marina Sirtis) examines those afflicted and learns that they share a common memory of an intense emotional experience. When Data (Brent Spiner) learns that he was physically absent from the ship for over an hour, Picard (Patrick Stewart) begins to suspect that an alien force has been conducting secret medical experiments on the crew.

En route to Targa IV, an ecologically devastated planet, the crew welcomes Amanda (Olivia d'Abo), a young honor student chosen to serve aboard the Enterprise. Amanda single-handedly saves the ship from destruction, revealing that she possesses miraculous Q-like powers. When the senior staff meets to discuss the situation, Q (John de Lancie) appears and announces that Amanda is indeed a member of the Q, and he has come to escort her back to the Q Continuum. At first she refuses, but Q is not easily put off and begins to tempt her with the true scope of her powers. Ultimately, she will be forced to choose: be human or be a Q - and the wrong decision could cost Amanda her life.
