After locating the Brattain, a science vessel aimlessly adrift in space, the crew of the Enterprise discovers that, with the exception of the ship's Betazoid counselor, everyone on board is dead.

While attempts to communicate with the lone survivor prove futile, the science vessel's engines refuse to start. After investigating, Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) concludes that the crew must have killed one another and warns that the Enterprise might suffer the same fate.

Mysteriously, the crew becomes increasingly hostile and paranoid, so Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) orders the ship to leave the area, but her engines have also shut down. Now, with the crew members quickly losing their grip on reality, Troi (Marina Sirtis) and Data (Brent Spiner) are the only ones left sane enough to save the ship. But can they solve the mystery before everyone goes mad?

While serving on the U.S.S. Victory, Geordi (LeVar Burton) and his friend Susanna (Maryann Plunkett) were part of an Away Team sent to investigate the disappearance of the colonists on Tarchannen III. Now, the members of the same Away Team have begun to vanish as well!

When a stolen shuttle is spotted on course to Tarchannen III, the Enterprise pursues the craft to that location, but finds no signs of life. However, the planet's surface is apparently making Susanna ill. Lab tests show that her blood chemistry has been altered and she is slowly being transformed into an alien. What happened to the other Away Team members is happening to her...and Geordi is next.

With time running out, Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) must find a cure before the transformation is complete and Geordi's identity is lost forever.
