Geordi (LeVar Burton) complains to Picard (Patrick Stewart) about Lt. Barclay (Dwight Schultz), a painfully shy and irresponsible engineer. As Picard urges Geordi to find a way to motivate Barclay, he retreats to the Holodeck. Casting crew members in supporting rolls, he acts out his wildest fantasies, including a romance with Troi (Marina Sirtis).

As Geordi, Troi and Riker (Jonathan Frakes) go to confront Barclay in the Holodeck, the Enterprise is jolted by a sudden increase in warp speed. Geordi needs Barclay's help to diagnose the problem before the rapidly accelerating starship self-destructs. Can Geordi pull Barclay out of his fantasy world in time to save the Enterprise?

The crew is stunned when a shuttle craft manned by Data (Brent Spiner) explodes on a transport mission. Geordi (LeVar Burton), distraught over the sudden death of his friend, refuses to believe the tragedy was an accident.

Geordi's suspicions arise when he learns that Data never sent a transmission confirming his departure from the ship of Kivas Fajo (Saul Rubinek), his last stop before the explosion. Did Data simply forget protocol, or was he trying to alert the crew to danger?

Meanwhile, aboard the ship of Kivas Fajo, Fajo has added a new attraction to his collection of one-of-a-kind objects from the Universe: a humanoid android from the U.S.S. Enterprise.
