As part of an exchange program, the Enterprise plays host to a Klingon officer named Kurn (Tony Todd). Kurn hands Worf (Michael Dorn) the surprise of his life when he informs the lieutenant that they are brothers, separated after their parents were killed in the Romulan assault on the Khitomer Outpost. Evidence has surfaced that indicated their late father Mogh may have aided the Romulans, and now Worf, the eldest son, must go before the Klingon High Council to defend his family's honor.

After the trial begins, Kurn, who is serving as his brother's second (or cha'Dich) is attacked and severely injured by Klingon assassins. Worf shocks the council when he appears with his new cha'Dich - Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Now Picard must prove that Mogh was innocent, or surrender Worf to meet the punishment for his father's treason: death by execution.

During an investigation of a radiation anomaly, the Enterprise is met by a Klingon warship bearing Ambassador K'Ehleyr (Suzie Plakson), a half-human, half-Klingon. When she beams aboard to meet with Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), she brings a surprise for Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) - their young son.

While Worf is faced with conflicting feelings for K'Ehleyr and his child, Picard must confront a momentous task. Klingon High Council Leader K'Mpec has been poisoned and is on his deathbed. Knowing he doesn't have long to live, he summons Picard to arbitrate the imminent power struggle for leadership of the Klingons. One of the two contenders is also K'Mpec's murderer, and the fragile peace between the Federation and the Klingons depends on Picard's ability to discover who is the traitor - before he becomes the new Klingon leader.

While Worf (Michael Dorn) resigns his Starfleet commission to join the Klingon Defense Force, Picard (Patrick Stewart) becomes convinced the Romulans are supporting the Duras family in the Klingon Civil War and initiates a blockade.

The Duras sisters, in alliance with the mysterious Romulan commander, Sela (Denise Crosby), plot to destroy their common enemies. Sela visits Picard aboard the Enterprise with an ultimatum: either end the blockade immediately or prepare to be attacked.

In a daring strategy, Picard convinces the Klingons to launch a massive attack which forces the sisters of Duras to call for help. The Romulans are unable to break the blockade and must retreat. Now that the war is over, only one important question remains: will Worf return to the Enterprise?

This version of Redemption, Parts I & II is the edited edition, in which the two episodes are seamlessly edited together to form a cohesive storyline. The "to be continued..." tag line of Part I and it's associated closing credits, as well as the "last time on Star Trek: The Next Generation..." opening for Part II are not included. The sidebreak takes place at the division of the two episodes and the fade out on side 1 is poorly executed.
