Sirna Kilrami (Roy Brocksmith), an arrogant master strategist from the Zakdorn race, has beamed aboard the Enterprise to oversee the crew's participation in Starfleet's battle simulation program. Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Riker (Jonathan Frakes) will face each other in a mock battle wherein Picard Helms the Enterprise and Riker commands a dilapidated, 80-year-old vessel named the Hathaway.

The Hathaway wins the first round by distracting the Enterprise with a holographic image of a Romulan warship. Moments later, Picard sees a Ferengi vessel and believes it is another ruse. But the Ferengi ship is real and launches a devastating attack on the Enterprise. Now the war games have turned real as Picard and Riker's strategic abilities are put to the ultimate test.

While Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is conducting a geological survey on Surata Four, his thigh is pierced by a small thorn which kills all feeling in that leg. Aboard the Enterprise, Dr. Pulaski (Diana Muldaur) determines that the thorn contains a mysterious organism that is coursing through Riker's nervous system. Pulaski tells Picard (Patrick Stewart) that she cannot kill the organism without also taking Riker's life.

In order to keep Riker's brain functioning, Pulaski begins to electronically stimulate his memory and notices that positive memories seem to feed the growth of the organism. Pulaski surmises that negative emotions might destroy the organism...but could they also destroy Riker?
