While mapping an extremely dense globular cluster, sensors aboard the Enterprise mistakenly detect a massive explosion in the cargo bay. When crew members who were near the cargo bay begin to exhibit strange symptoms, including excessive fatigue, pain and anxiety, an investigation reveals a mysterious sub-space force in the room. Troi (Marina Sirtis) examines those afflicted and learns that they share a common memory of an intense emotional experience. When Data (Brent Spiner) learns that he was physically absent from the ship for over an hour, Picard (Patrick Stewart) begins to suspect that an alien force has been conducting secret medical experiments on the crew.

En route to Targa IV, an ecologically devastated planet, the crew welcomes Amanda (Olivia d'Abo), a young honor student chosen to serve aboard the Enterprise. Amanda single-handedly saves the ship from destruction, revealing that she possesses miraculous Q-like powers. When the senior staff meets to discuss the situation, Q (John de Lancie) appears and announces that Amanda is indeed a member of the Q, and he has come to escort her back to the Q Continuum. At first she refuses, but Q is not easily put off and begins to tempt her with the true scope of her powers. Ultimately, she will be forced to choose: be human or be a Q - and the wrong decision could cost Amanda her life.

Due to a molecular mishap during transport, Picard (Patrick Stewart) and three other crew members return to the Enterprise as 12-year-old children. Though their minds remain intact, the crew has trouble taking them seriously and they are relieved of duty until a cure can be found.

Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) finds a way to reverse the effects, but before they can begin the process, Klingon warships attack the Enterprise. As the crew prepares to defend the ship, hostile Ferengi materialize on board and take control. Young Picard and his preteen crew use their unusual appearance to sabotage the Ferengi plans - but can these little rascals save the ship?

When a supply ship is delayed, the crew of the Enterprise has an opportunity to pursue recreational interests. While Geordi (LeVar Burton) conducts an experiment with Data (Brent Spiner), Worf (Michael Dorn) and Alexander (Brian Bonsall) enter a holodeck and travel to the old West for a wild showdown.

Unfortunately, a malfunction in the ship's computer interrupts the fun and a murderous outlaw, who looks exactly like Data, kidnaps Alexander. Worf attempts to freeze the program but the safety device fails. Now the vacation has become a potentially dangerous nightmare filled with diabolical Datas, but one question remains: who is the fastest gun in the universe?
