While investigating the disappearance of a J'Naii shuttlecraft, the Enterprise discovers a pocket of "null space." Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Soren (Melinda Culea), a J'Nai pilot, join forces in an effort to rescue the craft from this strange phenomenon. A friendship begins and though the J'Nai are genderless, the attraction between Riker and Soren is undeniable.

As the mission progresses, Soren reveals that sexual interaction is illegal in her society. She also reveals that she is an outcast because she has female tendencies and desires.

The following day, Riker and Soren locate the missing craft and rescue the survivors. During the celebration, they sneak off and share a passionate kiss, which is unfortunately witnessed by one of Soren's colleagues. J'Naii law has been broken and Soren is arrested. Now, overcome by passion, Riker dares to rescue her.

Red Alert! Red Alert! The Enterprise is trapped in time and doomed to eternal destruction.

When the starship enters the Typhon Expanse, a previously unexplored region of space, Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) encounters a feeling of déjà vu while playing cards. Then in Sickbay, she examines a dizzy Geordi (LeVar Burton) and experiences the same sensation again. Later, there is a problem on the bridge and the main propulsion systems collapse. Suddenly, an older starship appears out of the Expanse on a collision course. Evasive maneuvers fail and the two ships collide and explode!

Instantly, the officers are playing poker again. Soon, the entire crew realizes they are stuck in a causality loop, endlessly repeating the same fragment of time. Now they must figure out a way to escape the loop or be doomed to eternal destruction. Guest starring Kelsey Grammer as Captain Bateson.

En route to Starfleet Academy, where Picard (Patrick Stewart) is scheduled to deliver the year's commencement address, the crew learns that Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) and his squadron were involved in a devastating accident in which a cadet was killed.

While an initial inquiry places blame for the accident on the victim, Picard and the crew begin their own investigation. To protect their careers, the squadron leader (Star Trek: Voyager's Robert Duncan McNiell) urges the cadets to stick together even if it means disregarding the facts.

At the hearing, Wesley is questioned about the data from his flight recorder and caught in a lie. Picard, whose own investigation has revealed the truth, sternly reminds Wesley of his duties as a Starfleet cadet: tell the truth or suffer the consequences.

After destroying a deadly asteroid in the Pelloris Field, the Enterprise heads toward the Moselina System unaware that a strange particle cloud has contaminated the ship.

En route, Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett) beams aboard and announces her plans to marry a man she has never met. Much to her daughter's dismay, she accompanies Worf's son, Alexander (Brian Bonsall), to the Holodeck and introduces him to her hedonistic lifestyle.

Meanwhile, the crew finds that mechanical parts around the ship are being mysteriously transformed into gelatinous material. When life support systems begin to fail, the crew discovers an alien parasite from the asteroid is causing the problem. As they search for a solution, an even bigger disaster looms on the horizon: Lwaxana and her husband-to-be are completely incompatible!
