Conclusion. After firing on the Enterprise, Picard (Patrick Stewart and Riker (Jonathan Frakes) play a deadly game of cat and mouse with Baran (Richard Lynch), the sadistic leader of the ragtag band of mercenaries who are stealing valuable artifacts from archaeological sites throughout the sector. While Riker earns Baran's trust, Picard discovers that he is not the only one on board with a hidden agenda. A Vulcan mercenary named Tallera (Robin Curtis) reveals that Baran is collecting the artifacts in order to reassemble the telepathic resonator, a legendary weapon of mass destruction. While Baran plots Picard's demise and Tallera plans to take the device for herself, Picard and Riker desperately try to find a way to stop them.

While the crew struggles to install a new warp core, Data (Brent Spiner) becomes preoccupied with his first bad dream. Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis) encourages him to keep at it even though he is apprehensive about reactivating his dream sequence. But after another nightmare his chronometer fails and he oversleeps for the first time. Unable to find a cause for these strange occurrences, Troi suggests that he could be developing a neurosis. Later, he experiences bizarre hallucinations and inexplicably attacks Troi. Picard (Patrick Stewart) confines him to quarters, but shutting down his dream program doesn't put an end to the phantasms and soon everyone on board is in danger.

The Enterprise welcomes a delegation of the Cairn, a telepathic species that has no concept of spoken language. Troi's (Marina Sirtis) Betazoid mother, Lwaxana (Majel Barrett), serves as their interpreter and immediately tries to spark a romance between her daughter and Maques (Norman Large), the visiting group's senior diplomat. When Lwaxana begins to behave erratically, Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) runs some tests and orders her to refrain from using her telepathic abilities. Predictably, Lwaxana defies her orders and soon afterward experiences a psychic collapse. Maques tells Troi that he sensed a dark place in Lwaxana's metaconscious mind, and in a desperate attempt to save her, he provides Troi with a telepathic bridge into the darkest reaches of her mother's mind.

The Enterprise arrives at Kesprytt III to evaluate a request by the Kes, one of the planet's two quarrelsome societies, for associate membership in the Federation. While transporting to the Kes, Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) mistakenly end up in a Prytt prison cell where they are accused of conspiracy and implanted with strange electronic devices.

After managing to escape, they make their way toward the Kes border. But it's slow going because the devices implanted in their necks allow them to read each other's most intimate thoughts. Now as they try to hide their true feelings from one another, the rest of the crew struggles to negotiate their freedom.
