The Mystery of Amelia Earhart solved at last? A distress call from a nearby star system leads Voyager to an amazingly Earth-like planet...and to the discovery that one of history's most famous missing persons was abducted by aliens during her fated 1937 flight.

Having existed in cryostasis on the Earth-like planet for 400 years, Earhart (Sharon Lawrence) is revived into an era of flight far beyond anything she could have imagined. For Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), meeting Earhart provides an opportunity to thank the pioneering aviatrix for the inspiration she provided women through the years. And for the crew of Voyager, the visit to the hospitable world presents a fateful decision. Will they make the planet their new home? Or will they continue the starship's long, homeward journey?

The remote reaches of space become the setting for rites- and wrongs- of passage when Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran) journeys from the starship to perform a solitary Indian ritual in honor of his deceased father...and when a Kazon youth sets out to earn his warrior status by killing the Federation officer.

The boy, however, proves no match for the starship veteran. Chakotay captures him and, in turn, both he and the boy are taken hostage by the Kazons. Because the boy failed his murderous ritual, Kazon leaders sentence him to die...and Chakotay is the appointed executioner. Instead, the two prisoners unite in a bold escape, setting in motion a perilous adventure in which both prove they are more allies than enemies.

Sorting out what's real from what's not real isn't easy, especially when the being doing the choosing is a hologram who's beginning to suspect he's human! The starship's doctor (Robert Picardo) always thought he was a walking, talking program - an Emergency Medical Hologram wasn't supposed to bleed, feel pain, emit brain waves or have any other typical indicators of life. But these signs and other mysterious events lead him to think he's human...and that Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran) and others around him are mere holograms. As the Doctor struggles to determine what is and what is not reality, he also confronts an ominous decision: the only sure way to find the answer is to destroy Voyager.

Who will operate Voyager if it takes decades to find its way home? Should crew members start raising families so that they'll have replacement personnel for the starship in years to come? Those questions come to the forefront when swarms of space-swelling, protozoa-like life-forms attach themselves to the the starship because they think the ship is a reproductive mate.

The electronic field emitted by the swarms has a profound impact on Kes (Jennifer Lein), disrupting her biological clock and beginning Elogium, the phase in which Ocampan women become fertile. The process occurs only once in an Ocampan's life, so if Kes ever wants to have a child, she must find a mate now. She asks Neelix (Ethan Phillips) to father the child. But the prospects of parenthood may be more than he can accept.
